Accessibility

Getting to FMC Owo depends on your starting point:

  • From Lagos: You can take a direct car to Akure, then transfer to Owo (Ikare Junction), or a direct car to Abuja that drops you at Owo.

  • From Abuja: Direct cars to Owo are available, dropping passengers at Ikare Junction.


Accommodation

Status: Available

Types & Capacity:

  • One HO per room.

  • Two accommodation options: inside the hospital and outside the hospital.

Caution Fee:

  • Inside: ₦10,000/month (₦120,000 yearly)

  • Outside: ₦5,000/month (₦60,000 yearly)

Room Features:

  • Self-contained, moderately spacious, no AC (fan available), with bathroom (shower only, no water heater).

  • Kitchen: Available.

  • Furnishing: Bed, pillow; some rooms have table and chair.

  • Power Supply: Stable inside hospital, fair outside.

  • Roommate System: Single occupancy.

Selection Process: Assigned by the HO rep, first-come, first-served.

Insider Tip: Avoid working recklessly at night.


Salary & Allowances

  • Monthly Pay: ₦306,000

  • Payment Schedule: Can vary; new HOs work for 3 months before the first MDCN payment. Subsequent payments are monthly.

  • Other Benefits: No feeding or call allowance currently (NARD is negotiating), but call food is provided.


Lifestyle & Nearby Amenities

Centrality: Accommodation is close to the hospital (within ~2 km).

Nearby Attractions:

  • Supermarkets 🛍: Mini supermarket at Ikare Junction, super-mini at Rainbow Junction near the hospital.

  • Restaurants 🍽: Three eateries outside the hospital and three inside.

  • Cinemas 🎬 & Parks 🌳: Located in Akure (~30–40 min drive), suitable for weekends.

  • Hangout Spots 📸: Referenced above; explore in Akure.


Work Environment & Responsibilities

Orientation: Fellow HOs provide guidance and explanations; friendly and approachable environment.

Orderliness: Non-toxic work environment with proper supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ward Rounds 👩‍⚕: Pre-rounds (IPR) and consultant ward rounds, depending on the department.

  • IV Access 💉: HO handles IV lines, guided by fellow HOs.

  • Drug Administration 💊: HO-administered push drugs (IV antibiotics, furosemide, control drugs); infusion meds handled by nurses (except in surgery).

  • Post-Round Mop-ups: Conducted by HOs.

Staff & Colleagues:

  • Doctors: Friendly and supportive if willing to learn.

  • Admin staff: Minimal interaction beyond screening.

  • Nurses: Mostly friendly, but maintain professional authority; confirm directives with seniors, not nurses.

Key Tip: Be present, proactive, and available while knowing when to take a step back.


Food Options

Inside Hospital: Three canteens available.

Outside Hospital: Nearby eateries, bike ride ~₦300. Delivery contacts are available among HOs.
