The FMC Umuahia is the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, a premier tertiary hospital in Abia State, Nigeria. It is a government-owned institution that provides a wide range of healthcare services, including specialized medical care.

📍 Location: Umuahia, Abia State

Address: Federal Medical Centre, Aba Rd, opposite Guaranty Trust Bank, Umu Obasi, Umuahia 440236, Abia

Accessibility: The hospital is in the center of Umuahia. Keke and buses run frequently through various parts of the city.

🏠 Accommodation

Status: Limited

Quarters capacity: HO capacity is 80. One person per room.

Room Features:

  • Depends on old or new HOQ.

  • Both are room and parlor, size varies.

  • Old HOQ comes with a bed frame.

  • New HOQ comes with fridge, bed frame, mattress, and microwave.

  • You may have to make changes to the room personally.

  • Each has a kitchen and bathroom inside the room.

Power supply: Stable. However, water isn’t always available.

🏆 Selection Process

It’s supposed to be by balloting, but the process is unreliable. People can “work it” for you if you’re willing to pay an extra cost.

💰 Salary & Allowances

  • MDCN Base Salary: ₦267k (same as other mdcn portal centers)

  • Monthly pay: ₦10,000

  • Payment date: First week of the month

  • Other benefits: Call food is available, but portion sizes are questionable.

🌆 Flex & Lifestyle

Centrality: Umuahia is generally slow-paced, but everything you need is available (though with limited options).

Nearby attractions:

  • Supermarkets 🛍: ShopRite, Kindness, Market Square

  • Restaurants 🍽: Jovit, Crunchies, Bistros, Barbados Lounge

  • Other hangout spots 📸: De Latinos

🏥 Work Environment & Orderliness

Orientation: Usually unit by unit, from seniors. More of a “learn as you go” kind of situation.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Checking vitals

  • HO ward rounds

  • Updating patients’ notes

  • Preparing patients for surgery

  • Setting lines

  • Passing catheters

  • Giving IV medications

  • Maintaining continuation sheets (you’ll understand once you start)

Staff & Colleagues: Generally not toxic. Seniors vary but are accessible.

Admin staff & nurses: Nurses are usually friendly. Some may have attitude issues but eventually give in when you do your job well.

Key tip: Don’t let your Chief look for you. Do your tasks on time. If you have an issue, inform your Chief—don’t make decisions on your own so you always have someone to fall back on.

🍽 Food Options

  • Inside hospital: Variety of meals from canteens and food vendors.

  • Outside hospital: Many restaurants available, and Google Maps works well here.

💡 Moral Lesson / Key Takeaway
Do your job when you need to.
